looking at the recent supreme court hearing on Gay marriage in Boston Globe

Looking at the Boston Globe, one of the main stories is the recent hearing Supreme Court has on the Historic Gay Marriage case. This caught my eye because recently on Facebook people have been setting their default picture to an equal sign. This equal sign picture, that is pink with 2 red lines, is used to symbolize the equality that everyone should have. The equality, power, and rights to be able to marry whoever you want and not be judged or torn down. Women should be able to marry other women if they please and same with men. Amazing enough, although times are continuing to change, gay rights are still a huge problem that people have to face. With so much battle over equality, there must be something changing soon, because the gay rights activists are not giving up. They are going to continue the battle until they get fair rights, and are allowed to be just like everyone else in love. The picture that is placed with this headline in the Boston Globe is of many people protesting with signs for equality and acceptance. The picture is so powerful because these people just want to have freedom of rights just like everyone else.

Finding my story

While I was looking at the UNH home page I saw under events that there was a man coming to the MUB to share his story. It wasn't just any story though, he was a blind man that is a hiker. He made a documentary on his journey of hiking all 48 peaks in NH in one winter season. After going and watching his movie, I am truly inspired. Learning that this man never gave up while hiking, and doing some of the most extreme things, he still kept going no matter what obstacles got in his way. His guide dog, crew, friends, and himself went on a mission to complete the challenge and make it in history. Finding this story to write about, and hearing this mans story made me appreciate everything I take for granted in life. Who knew that even the little things, like seeing, is so easily overlooked because we use it everyday and don't think twice about it, but this man lives with not seeing everyday and he is so powerful. I just hope I can give his story justice!

hitman racing across NYC

NEW YORK- Five people are dead after a shoot out that raced across the city. Policeman Jimmy Doyle was in pursuit of high-speed chase after police confirmed hit man, Pierre Nicoli, tries to gun him down.

            Saturday late afternoon while Doyle was walking through the park with a brief case in one hand and a new paper in the other.

            Shots were fired and Betty Badluck goes down. Badluck happened to be in the way of fire because the bullet was intended to hit Doyle. 

Hit man runs from rooftop and Doyle follows with handgun in hand.

           

The man on the roof was seen wearing a black ski mask and a long sleeve black coat. As Doyle began the hunt, the hit man sprinted to try to make a clean getaway, but Doyle wasn’t ready to give up the fight.

Nicoli jumps on the closest train and leaves Doyle in the dust.

As the train is racing down the tracks, Doyle obtains a passing by car and sets out to chase the train. Speeding down the street and honking at other cars, Doyle is dead set on catching Nicoli.

While on the train the assassin takes control of the train by keeping the driver captive and telling him not to stop at the stops.  

Practicing speeches; MLK speech

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. took a stand to show that the Negros will fight for rights. The first speech on Negro rights, equality, and freedom fill the ears of millions as they watched and listen in astonishment to a memorable speech.

Rev. King said, “I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.” Wednesday was a day that will be remembered forever as the Rev. talks to empower his fellow Negros with equality for all.

            As onlookers chant and whistle with approval the Rev. makes very clear what he wants to see change. Reflecting back to times of slavery and poverty of Negros, 100 years later, Negros are still facing the harsh times of segregation and discrimination. “So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition,” said Rev. King.

            Americans are encouraged to open up to equality. When the Constitution and Declaration of Independence were made, a promissory note that “all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” said Rev. King.

He is pointing out that America has been in the wrong for too long, and it was time to make a change.

            “Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning” said King. Reminding folks that this is the time to make change. Not tomorrow, not next week, and not in the future, but today.

It won’t happen right away, it will take time, but we must start now or times will never change. There is no rest to forming rights of equality and the Negros are not going to sit back, they are going to fight in full force. 

Forming a soft lead vs. a hard lead

When forming a hard lead for a story it is fast, breath taking, and full of excitement because it is highly important breaking news, or it is very recent and needed to be known. Writing those types of leads for our stories are more fun because it jumps into the story faster and it is easier to answer the 5 w's faster. I feel that it is more interesting to write fast introductions and it is a little easier. When writing about Valentines Day though, it was much easier to start with a softer lead because Valentines Day is not breaking news. Everyone knows that it is a holiday and it is not a very demanding holiday for high rated news. Instead it was good to pick the softer lead because it still draws in the reader, but in a more relaxed way that keeps them wanted to read more to find out the point of the story. Also it is good to use softer leads because you can build it longer and keep interest, where as in a hard lead you get all of the hard hitting news out right in the beginning and then end it with the boring finishing details to wrap it up. I think even though it is easier to write the hard leads, it is more effective to write a softer lead for our types of stories.

Reading today's Boston Globe

While scanning through the Boston Globe for today, I found one of the most interesting stories and now I want to know even more about it than the article gave for information. The article is called "Police Chief son arrested in N.H." and it caught my eye because there are always interesting police stories that have to do with drunk driving. As I started reading the story it then became even more interesting because the arrest of the police chief's son happened in Plymouth, NH on the past weekend, and I was in Plymouth during this arrest. It just so happens that this boy that is from Mass. who is 22 years old was in the car with 5 minors who had all been under the influence, got pulled over due to suspicion that the driver was intoxicated. Then when the boy got pulled over on High st. he was taken with his girlfriend back to his house in Mass. by the police. This story is super intriguing and it is awesome that it took place where I happened to be, and the Boston Globe is covering it.

using blogger

Using blogger has taught me many new things and also has helped form new writing skills. One interesting thing it taught me was that I can write about almost anything, and people will still read it, there are so many different types of readers out there. You never know who could be reading your blog so it is always cool to see how many people view your blog each day. Another thing I learned using blogger is that it is a good way to get thoughts out, you can write personally, but you can also keep it short handed. One particular thing blogger helped me with is to write about various topics, but still keep my own writing style. Writing journalism pieces has brought me out of my comfort zone and showed me how to condense my writing and make it more for the crowd rather than myself. Blogger has helped formulate my ideas for stories, helps for practicing stories, and I can also use it to continue with my writing itself. This blog site is user friendly, and a creative way to share your thoughts.
